movie references in lupin iii:

Le Mans (1971) in 'Lupin is burning' (1971)

Lupin III is a franchise that has always been fond of referencing and parodying famous movies, so it makes sense that the very first episode is mostly one big love letter to a movie that premiered the same year. Le Mans is still regarded as one of the best racing movies of all time, in part because it intermingles real footage of the yearly race with the fictional story of Steve McQueen’s racecar driver.

'Lupin is Burning' features Lupin in the Steve McQueen role, and in addition to using real-life racecar drivers as his opponents, it mirrors several key scenes in the movie, like closeups of a Monaco Heuer wristwatch and the use of freeze-frames during action filled scenes.
